Shorts

Trousers reach the top of the thigh or partway to the knee and are worn by both sexes for sport, relaxation in summer, etc. The answer is in which came first. The word pants has been commonly used for centuries. Leaving the lower part of your legs uncovered was not an option for most recorded history. At least, in my opinion, “shorts” are a minimum of mid-thigh length and a maximum length not covering the knees. “short shorts” would be anything that covers the entire butt plus an inch or two, extending down to mid-thigh.
